Windows Vista and IPX/SPX

THIS DOES NOT WORK ON WINDOWS 7!

Microsoft has removed IPX/SPX support from Windows Vista.

Because a lot of older games only can be played across a LAN using this protocl (for example: the early Command & Conquer series) I have done some research and discoved that simply copying some files into a couple of Vista folders will allow you to install this protocol once again!

This operation requires Administrator Rights!
Please note that I can't be held responsible for any damage caused to your system!
This works only for the 32bit version of Windows Vista!
NOT the 64bit version, as that version will only accept signed drivers.

There are two ways to install the protocol on your Vista installation:

1. Automatic Installation:

Download & execute this installer (275KB).

2. Manual Installation:

Download this ZIP file (368KB)
Extract it to the root of your systemdrive (most of the time this will be C:\) while observing the folder structure.

Then open the Network & Sharing Center.
Choose the option that says "Manage Network Connections"
Right click your connection, click properties
Click the Install button

The NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol may be listed on the Network Protocol list.
DO NOT SELECT IT.

Click Have Disk... C:\Windows\inf.
Select netnwlnk.inf.
Click OK.
Select the NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol from the list.
Vista will tell you that the publisher could not be verified.
Click Install.

You're done!

Enjoy!
